Decor changes Behind My Red Door…

009

Before I get to that, I want to thank everyone who took their time to comment on my last post. It seems the “should we or shouldn’t we” post brought out many varied opinions. It was so nice hearing from so many peeps and especially from folks who haven’t commented before.  It’s pretty clear there are as many opinions on when to start decorating for Christmas as there are bloggers. Isn’t it wonderful that we can have these friendly discussions and make our own choices? There truly is no right or wrong. What works in one family might not work in another. Some folks feel Christmas decor does nothing to take away from the thanks they feel and express at Thanksgiving. Others enjoy their harvest decor right through Thanksgiving and then enjoy Christmas through to January. And then there are many variations in between.  I have to say, the older I get, the more I cling to tradition. Keeping some things special  for a certain Holiday or season is what makes them exactly that – SPECIAL.  I don’t want rush everything in life. I want to savor the season.

So because of that, and because of a special gift I received this week, Thanksgiving decor is staying up until the last person leaves that afternoon. I am hosting this year and there will be 12 at our table this year and most have another side of the family to see as well so my dinner is early so they can go eat pie with with the in-laws. That means I am expecting to be cleaned up earlier than usual and I hope to have time to start decorating that evening.

You already caught a glimpse of the gift in the photo above. Meet Rudman the Turkey!! He is all wool – such scrumptious colors too - and he is an original creation made just for me by my friend Audrey of A.Lil’somethin’ – her selling blog and her other blog is Audrey’s Prim World.

Isn’t he handsome??

022

When A Primitive Place held a sale of prim goodies, I had purchased Audrey’s wool Pilgrim Pie. You can see her in my header photo, and here is a close up of her …

142

And it just so happens that when I had my fall gathering, I got Audrey’s swap and the wonderful redware Give Thanks plate in my header was part of my bag of goodies. So with the addition of these 3 wonderful pieces, I now have just the right size collection of Thanksgiving decor. By the way, Audrey is not only talented and creative, she is smart! She made another Rudman just in case she got more requests for him – like she did after folks saw the Pilgrim Pie I purchased. Go on over to her blog to find out how to contact her. Thanks so much Audrey! Rudman is perfect!!

Isn’t it wonderful we live in a country where we can decide for ourselves when and how to decorate our homes? We enjoy so many freedoms thanks in no small part to our Armed Forces! I didn’t post on Veteran’s Day so I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our Veteran’s for their brave service and giving so much of themselves and their families for the rest of us. You are the true heroes in this world! THANK YOU!

~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~

Suzanne from Blueberry Cottage left me a comment on an older blog post and I hopped over to her blog and was delighted to have found it!! I found she lives in NE too and not too far from me. She is a big Tasha Tudor fan and owns Corgi’s and my kids were raised on Tasha’s books and Mr. Red Door had Corgi’s growing up. Those are but a few of the things we found we have in common.  When you have a moment stop on over to her delightful blog and say to Suzanne. I have been reading some of her older posts, and I am enjoying the stories of her life in her old house on their “hobby” farm. And she clued me into a prim shop I wasn’t aware of so I am looking forward to a drive in the country one of these days!!

~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~

So what are the decor changes? Well at the risk of sounding like a broken record, I find as I settle into my new role as part time care giver to Lili that I must make even more changes in how I spend my time than I originally thought. So with that in mind, when I have a few free moments, I am working hard to simplify things Behind My Red Door. I am online much less often than even I expected I would be. To anyone that has emailed me or asked a question in your comment, thank you for your patience.  Sometimes I have a quick minute to read emails and comments but not always enough time to answer them right away.  I know you all agree that family and home must come first. I just don’t want anyone to be disappointed when I can’t get back to you as quickly as you or I would like. Blogging wouldn’t be what it is without the give and take with each other and I want to continue to blog and visit your blogs too – I enjoy it so very much- it just won’t be as often. Okay, enough about that!

So I have been organizing and purging. I am getting rid of things I no longer need or use including some prims! I do this yearly, but this time I am doing it with a new eye because my look is changing too. Yes prim friends, you will see some changes Behind My Red Door. Because for me, when I bring in new things, something else has to go. Less is more. I am going to have a big box of things to donate to friends or thrifts shops when I am done. And I am going to have some new pieces in some of my rooms. In fact, I have some pictures to show you already. Some prim and some, well not so much!

Okay, I’ll admit these first few are still pretty prim. My new diaper carrier…

022

And this new little black cupboard in my office from Homestead Primitives – it’s full of baby gear. 010

And my new changing table. Who said Prims and babies don’t mix?

093

It is also sometimes a baby seat…

003

And my newest desk decor now includes spinning tops…

139

And my office has a fancy new primary colored jumper…020

In the kitchen, along with homespun towels, my colonial drying rack now sports bibs and baby face clothes.107

And the kitchen counter has become a bottle drying rack. I have even added some shocking pink to my decor as you can see.111

And this side of the kitchen has become baby food central…124

And my colonial chandeliers are sporting new accessories…

098

Did you miss that?  Sorry - here is a closer look.

098

And my harvest table is now a feeding station….135

And the newest chair in the living room is in pastels and primary colors…016

And when I see this smile…

080

And hear the giggles when she sees her own face in the mirror, 091

I wouldn’t have it any other way!!

~**~**~**~**~**~

I am grateful that Mr. Red Door looks the other way when I buy more baby gear and ‘one more Christmas trinket’ for Lili.

Thank you as always for stopping by and making Behind My Red Door part of your day! I so appreciate each one of my bloggy friends and I love reading your comments!

Until next time – hugs, Grammy Linda

God Bless you sweet Linda! This is what Grandma's do best! I have been busy getting my home ready for Christmas, not decorating but making it more comfortable since my son, his wife, my granddaughter and little grandson will be here for Christmas, first time in almost 6 years! I want my house to be more welcoming for a 3 year old! Your sweety is too precious!

Have a lovely week, my busy friend...

Linda, thank you kindly for mentioning my blog. Your post gave me a good chuckle. My youngest grandaughter is 6 months and since my little girl is 5 we don't have anymore "baby" apparatus up. But, when she comes over wathc out--the pack and play is out, little walker type things are around, bouncy seats and yes, diapers! It's all a blessing though. When she leaves and it is all packed up with my daughter and son-in-law the house feels a bit empty. And oh dear, did I think of you yesterday! I forgot to tell you about this sweet prim shop right on your way to Walker Homestead if you take rt.9. They had an open house yesterday and I was just passing by on errands and was treated to goodies and lovely new prims! You can email me and I will give you the name and local if you like:-) Have a wonderful Sunday!

Kris said...

Good Sunday morning Linda,
Love your pics. I had to laugh....as my house went from something that was full of my own personality and handiwork, to Babies R Us!!!! When my daughter and grandson lived here that first year of his life, it was incredible...everywhere you looked....baby gear!! Now, I have one room where it all lives. And of course, my high chair, which I can now fold and hide in the laundry room when not in use. They do grow up fast. Is Lili allergic? I see she has Nutramagen. Sp? My daughter Gennifer was allergic and had to have that. She refused to nurse, and we had to buy that expensive formula for her. Is it still terribly expensive?
Happy day!

Hey Grammy Linda! I love it! Just how it should be....she is adorable and takes center stage. So of course your house will follow suit! In a very sweet way babies steal your heart, then your surroundings! hahaha...I put things away for years...now they are all back out. But I'd love to have those babies back in my arms just one more time. It is worth the mess!
Have a blessed Sunday!

Great post, grammy! Yes, change comes with necessity, and that chubby adorable face (Lili, I mean!!) is sure worth it. I'd help you clean out your prim goodies (!!!!) if I lived closer -- heh heh/lucky thrift shops!!! I'm with you on tradition and the holidays, not to mention that we are having yet another 70 degree day -- I'd rather keep autumn as long as possible! I'm not too fond of the heat, tho.

If my opinion counts, your new decor is fabulous, the grammy seal of approval. All your colors and fabric choices are just perfect. And when I see that smile I'd say how could you make any other choice. Lili is just the cutest.
Oh, lets not forget those Thanksgiving prim touches, perfect too. I so love the less is more decor!!
Have a great week with your Lili, she is going to have wonderful memories of your time together. Just as every child should be so fortunate to have!!!

My "baby" turns 13 in three weeks...I still miss the baby bottles on the side of the sink! Lili is such a sweet baby, I know you are enjoying her so much! That is so great that you live close enough to her that you can enjoy her. Thank you for your sweet comment about our veterans, I know my husband appreciates it as well! We will be decorating for Christmas in the next week since we will be out of town for Christmas. It will be done when we get home and I won't have to think about it.

Your 'new' decor is charming, Linda. The new additions certainly add color, dimension and texture which makes the whole picture VERY interesting. I love it!

Your special grandbaby Liliana deserves it all and I'm certain that Mr. Red Door approves in a way that only husbands and grandfathers can appreciate.

Love the decorating changes. Enjoy that little sweetie, before you know it she won't need any of those items. I know my decorating scheme for holidays changed once the grandkids arrived. I find I have more and more bright colored Christmas decor such as a big red Santa Cookie jar lollipops and candy canes amidst my greenery, but I wouldn't change a thing! They complete that full circle! Enjoy everyday with her!

Oh my goodness Linda, your changed to Behind the Red Door are absolutely perfect. I find myself smiling so much when I see the sweet face of that adorable Lili. She needs to be in a magazine or on the label of something - she is a very photogenic baby, beautiful and sweet and it shines from her. What a wonderful blessing.

I agree on the holiday decor - it doesn't change the Thanksgiving holiday at all - I view Thanksgiving as the start of the holiday season. I will have some decor up by then, maybe everthing but the tree and that's OK :).

Have a terrific week with Ms. Sweet Pea :)

I so want you to know I truly enjoy your posts and your honesty in all things!! I too feel the older I get the more I want traditions to stay and we too decorate Thanksgiving night for Christmas!! Have a wonderful week with your sweet Lili!!~hugs~

It has been quite a few years since the baby decor around here, but now we have 'graduated'. Now the playroom has a TV with a VCR/DVD player to play games and watch videos. And, my 'baby girl' aged six, asked for me to put jewelry on my Christmas list for her. No clothes and only a Webkin for a toy. I asked what she would like..."Anything you can find, Grammie. Gold and silver rings, earrings, and necklaces!" They grow up SO fast...this Summer she was a perpetual dirt magnet, and now she wants to be a GIRL....Yikes! Enjoy this stage of Lil a lot--the fun is just beginning.

Have a Great week...

I too enjoy having Thanksgiving decorating stay until the day is over. Normally I don't start my Christmas Decorating until the fist day of gun season. That's when my hubby leaves for a week and I can tear the house apart and get it back together before he returns home. Tradition! lol!

Found your blog a few months back and LOVE it! I am changing my decor to COlonial - prim having always felt most at home in that environment. You are an inspiration. I want to comment about your blog on decorating for Christmas. In my family, we watch the Macy's parade on Thanksgiving day and feel like that officially ushers in Christmas! The Radio City Rockettes welcome Santa to Herald Square as the parade reaches Macy's and that just does it for us. The day after Thanksgiving is when we start decoarting and we are like a bunch of Who's from Whoville when we get to putting out all our Christmas decor. I even have a Whoville Christmas hat I wear for this day. Traditions are for treasuring. By the way, thanks for the 5 kernels tradition you shared. We are going to include it as a new tradition this Thanksgiving. Isn't it lovely how people from all over can influence others in such a nice way?

Also - I feel for you with that tacky silly "fence" your neighbors put up. I live in a charming historic town (Fredericksburg, TX) and our street is full of wonderful old homes and we all decorate our porches and yards for the seasons. Some people bought the house next to me and after fixing it up, they built a metal storage building ON THE PROPERTY LINE. It has a very slanted roof so the rain was washing off and making a mud hole in my yard. It took quite a few talks with city hall to get this ugly thing moved to the required 5 ft set back from the property line. The home owner even put fake survey sticks in my yard and tried to convince the inspector that the line was further over than the survey shows. !!! I know how challenging it is to smile and ignore somethng like this.

I also love seeing pics of your family and sweet granddaughter. Brady, your granddoggy is wonderful too! I have a 96 pound Alaskan Malamute - Akeala Skye
and a rescued cattle dog - Kelsey the Cow Dog.

Thanks for sharing so much wonderful decor, recipes and sweet thoughts. I look forward to reading your blog and have enjoyed reading past posts.

Blessing to you and yours,
JuLee Reeves
