…decorate for Christmas before Thanksgiving that is? It seems there are some pretty varied opinions about that in blog land lately. I say to each his own! If you want to decorate now, go for it – please just make sure to post lots of pics for all of us to enjoy!! And if you like to keep your fall or harvest decor out up Thanksgiving dinner is done, hurray to you as well. I LOVE to decorate for Christmas. As well suited as our home is for fall decor, I think it is equally well suited to Christmas decor with all my neutral walls and red accents everywhere. I just love my Father Christmas collection, my prim tree with prim ornaments, my old fashioned feather trees, my gingers, my angels, the manger, and greens(faux and fresh) and berries. I love it all. Traditionally I have decorated for Christmas the day after Thanksgiving. I think it has been that way because in my neck of the woods harvest decor is still prevalent through Thanksgiving Day. Cornucopia’s and sheaves of wheat and pumpkins are everywhere. When I was growing up, stores didn’t stay open 24/7 and the day after Thanksgiving was the day the store owners started to put Christmas out. Our favorite Holiday moves were on anytime after Thanksgiving. Other than Santa in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, Christmas did not start until the turkey was eaten. It just is how it always was. Typically home owners followed suit. Sometime after Thanksgiving Day, Christmas decor would start to slowly appear in windows, an don porches and in homes. Slowly over the years, that has changed. I am not saying it is good or bad, it just is. My tradion of decorating for Christmas the day after Thanksgiving probably started when I was working. Even though as a mom I only worked part time and I was always home with my kiddo’s, I always took work home and November was a busy month in school. Progress reports, Open Houses and special projects kept me busy. So the long weekend after Thanksgiving gave me the time to put fall away, clean up all the bittersweet messes and get Christmas out. Because I decorate both fall and Christmas in a big way, I always need a lot of time for the switchover and that doesn’t even include the real greens I cut from our yard to tuck in a zillion places. By doing the switchover that weekend I was also ready for the important birthdays we have in December. Our favorite local radio station starts playing Christmas music the day after Thanksgiving so that fits right into my time frame as well. But despite waiting until then, I was always the first of my friends and family to have our home decorated for Christmas.
But last year I decorated for Christmas before Thanksgiving for a few reasons. Twigs from Mercantile Gatherings wanted pictures of our house with spring decor, so fall had to come down a little early so I could get those photo’s taken and sent off. And then I needed to decorate for Christmas, take photo’s and get them submitted to A Primitive Place as our home was chosen as their first featured Holiday Home. It seemed a bit strange to me to be eating Thanksgiving dinner with Christmas decor all around. Not because there is anything wrong with that, just because it was not tradition. I like tradition! I remember mentioning it to the family, and none of them seemed the least bit concerned. But I also remember thinking, I won’t decorate for Christmas this early again.
However, it is a woman’s prerogative to change her mind, right? And new traditions can be made, right? So that said, I am still not sure when I am going to decorate this year. I will admit that most of fall is already packed away. The bittersweet that was looking very sad and rather dusty because I picked it too early, is gone. I have my special Thanksgiving items in the dining room, but the rest of the inside Behind My Red Door is mostly back to non-seasonal. And I am enjoying the clean uncluttered look right now.
But that also means the house is ready for the Christmas decor!! So will I or won’t I?? That remains to be seen right now!! I have to say, seeing some sneak peeks at some other’s Christmas decor sure has me tempted to get mine out. And the Hallmark Channel has been advertising Christmas movies. And I was looking for a recipe in my old Christmas Issues of Early American Life and of course I looked at all the pictures too. And I loved seeing Janae's and Linda Harris’s homes in Country Sampler. Well it’s all so tempting! Doing Christmas right Behind My Red Door takes time and cleaning up the mountains of leaves outside is where my energy was spent this weekend. And it would be way too early to add the lives greens I use if I start too soon. Oh the dilemma! So just in case these are surrounded by Christmas the next time I post, here are a few pictures of my limited Thanksgiving Day decor.

So whether you start now, or wait until the last minute, when your Christmas or other seasonal Holiday decor (for my non Christian friends) is out and you have posted some pics, please stop by and let me know so I can be sure to take a peek!

Friday late afternoon as I was pulling into the driveway, I saw the mail carrier had left a bundle by the garage door. When I picked up the box and saw the return address, I couldn’t imagine what was inside but I was excited to find out. When I opened the box I am sure I squealed with delight. My sweet prim friend Sherrie from SC sent me a huge bunch of tallow berries from her very own tree from her very own yard! Aren’t they wonderful???!!
Sherrie said “They are also referred to as the popcorn plant, because when it opens it so resembles a kernel of popcorn and also when the kernels are popping open it sounds like popcorn popping. It is very common in the Low Country around Charleston, S.C.”
She even left some of the colorful leaves on because she knows I love my foliage. Wasn’t that thoughtful? It didn’t take me long to decide where they would go. I wanted to take the yarrow out of this basket and replace it with something else that could stay up for the rest of the year and the tallow berries are simply perfect!!
And I moved the basket and hung in on my fowl rack in the dining room. I just love it there with the berries.
I had to take a picture from this angle too – it’s perfect!
And I even had enough tallow berries for this little basket in the living room!!
Thank you so very much Sherrie. You are so kind and so thoughtful!
~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~
I often get question about it so I’ll let you know upfront, I have had this fowl rack for many many years. I got it at a shop called With Heart and Hand, now in Norfolk MA but previously in Franklin, MA. It used to be one of my favorite prim shops but they have changed direction in the last few years. Unfortunately their website is not updated. The intro says they have over 500 bolts of fabric and homespun and that has not been the case for sometime now. When the cost of gas was so high, I made the long drive there just for the fabric (after consulting the website) and was shocked to find the fabric loft no longer existed and there were less than a dozen bolts of fabric. I pointed that out to the owner and she was totally unfazed. And well over a year later she has not changed the inaccuracies on the website. So do be warned if you decide to make the trip, don’t expect rooms of prims and bolts of fabric. She does carry lots of jewelry and scarves and glitz and glam and they still do carry some prims, but not nearly as much as in the past. I personally no longer find it worth my time but you may feel differently.
~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~
Speaking of foliage, Mr. Red Door and I spent many hours outside the last 2 days cleaning up the leaves in our yard. It sure does seem more daunting the older we get. Well at least it does to me – Mr. Red Door being the strong burly man that he is, would never admit that!! My sore muscles and achy joints however protest more each year and I whine a bit more each year as well. When I went outside to start raking, they were literally 3 feet deep against the chicken wire fence our neighbor erects each fall to stop any leaves from any other tree not on his property from finding it way to his property. I was tempted to run and take a flying leap into the deep pile, but I probably would have broken a bone or pulled a muscle, so instead, we got busy tackling that daunting mess. We both dug in and worked together and we got them cleaned up for now. There are plenty more across the street that will blow over here and park themselves in our yard against that silly fence, and our maple still has some stragglers hanging on, so we will be out there cleaning up a few more times. But there’s a bright side to that – when we are done, the outside will be ready for Christmas Decor as well!

If you haven’t already, please do stop over to A Primitive Place and take a peek at my November Musings. I included some fun ideas and recipes for showing thankfulness, and a great cranberry relish recipe as well. Just scroll down the menu on the left to find Primitive Musing. While you are there, check out Char’s latest craft tutorial. Remember, you don’t need to be a member to access the website full of ideas. Only the forum requires you to sign up.

If you want to joint the Gratitude Attitude Challenge, click here to go to Mercy’s blog. We are posting something we are grateful for in every post until December 19th. This is the perfect time of year to stop and take stock of the blessings in our lives.
Despite my whining, I am truly grateful that this 54 year old body can still work hard when I need it too. I enjoy working along side Mr. Red Door when there is a lot of work to do outside or big projects inside. Many times I do the projects on my own. My mom and her mom were both not afraid of hard work, and I have followed in their footsteps. Delicate is not a word that has ever been used to describe me. I was born with big hands and feet as well as broad shoulders and I feel the good Lord gave them to me for a reason so I am proud to use them as long as I can! And I am also grateful for modern medicine and the arthritis drugs that give my achy joints some measure of relief after all that hard work!

My sweet Lili is on her way over here so her mommy and daddy can attend an adult birthday party at a restaurant. I bought her a new walker this week – not that she will walk anytime soon, but she can sit in and it has a nice tray for her rattles and teethers. She just loved being upright and seeing the world! I’ll get to feed her some cereal and applesauce and we might even take a walk outside before the sun sets. We’ll fit in lots of snuggles too – if Grampy doesn’t try to monopolize her that is!
Here she is with her new sneakers ..
Thank you as always for stopping by and making Behind My Red Door part of your day! I so appreciate each one of my bloggy friends and I love reading your comments!
Until next time – hugs, Grammy Linda

Linda,
We all can't wait to decorate for Christmas here at APP, and your home always inspires us to do so!Love the pictures and Lili too!
I like to decorate for Christmas the weekend after Thanksgiving. If I decorate any earlier or start listening to Christmas music before Thanksgiving, then I'm afraid to be on Christmas overload before the actual holiday is here. LOL But really, it's to each his/her own. Whenever a person finds the time to do it then he/she should do it. It's a lot of work getting the house all decked out!
I can't wait to see everyone's holiday homes though...for inspiration of course!
Lili is such a sweetie. You are so blessed!
lots of fun and lovely photos. that gingerbread Christmas tree is wonderful!
Linda,
Seems like everyone is decorating early this year or thinking about it. I usually get everything done before the 1st week of December. It takes me about 3-4 days I usually do a little at a time.
I have been so inspired by Janae's house and so many others lately that I may be tempted to decorate early too. My DH will be having surgery right before Thanksgiving so that may be a good idea. We'll see. I usually leave mine up until well after January 1st so maybe that's why it's not a big deal to me.
Carey
I'm wanting to get my Christmas decorating started also even though our Fall colors are just now showing...I think I will wait til after Luke's birthday on Friday!...(He's turning 3)...Then slowly start adding...I have tallow berries coming too!!!...I can't wait to get them...Sherrie is soooo sweet!!...And Liliana is absolutely beautiful!!!~~hugs,Jen
Hi Linda,
Nice post, I too wait until after Thanksgiving, but I will tell you when my guests leave I start to put all my harvest away and I slowly start to bring out my Christmas. I go to Heart in Hand in Norfork, but sadly it has been a while. They started to get rid of fabric a couple of years ago. I get emails from them, but my home is so full I am trying to hold back and purge a bit. We also spent the weekend cleaning up leaves and I started my windows. I just sat down and saw your post! It made my day...next is a long hot soak!
Have a great week.
Hugs,
Donna
Hi Linda!....that pic of Lili is so cute, she's a smiley girl!....the tallow berries are gorgeous and your placement of them is perfect.
I too have been toying with the idea of starting to decorate for Christmas but am going to hold out until my usual day which is the day after Thanksgiving as well, simply because I am a creature of habit and it would feel odd not to have my harvest decor out when we assemble in the dining room for our turkey dinner. I do so enjoy seeing all the pictures of Christmas decor from those who have taken the plunge and I enjoy thinking about the displays that will be.
Enjoy your evening with your sweet little flower and have a lovely Monday!
Janet
Hi Linda,
Well, I am anxious to see what you decide. I, for one, will wait until after Thanksgiving. I have our family here for that holiday, so that's the main reason I wait. I think a month or so is long enough for the Christmas decorations. I am always ready to declutter when it's over!
Enjoy Lili, as I know you will.
Hugs!
Hi Grammy Linda!
Liliana is soooo cute! Does she ever not smile? She is made for the camera.
You neighbor sounds funny....trying to keep leaves out, is he friendly?
Being a shopkeeper, AND having to put on Thanksgiving dinner, then face "Black Friday"....I think I will be decorating early so I can show my niece and nephew our Santa's and Snowmen. Then I will be so busy with the shop till January.
I remember the years I lived in Massachusetts and Thursday nite in Salem Ma. was the night to shop, and Sundays nothing was open! I miss those days. People shopped when the stores were open and life seemed slower, nothing was lost. Oh well....time marches on.
And by the way....you amaze me how much energy you have....way more than me!
Blessings....Dale
I start my Christmas decorating on Thanksgiving Day. Since my family has gotten so large and my siblings have their own families with grandchildren, my parents don't hold Thanksgiving dinner anymore (they make their rounds for dessert). So we have no where to go and while the turkey is in the oven, my hubby and I go out and put up the outside decor. We started putting up the house lights this weekend since it was so warm - beats climbing on the roof when there's snow on it! After dinner is finished and everything is all cleaned up, we put up the tree and the kids decorate it. It takes me the rest of the week to finish putting out all of my decor. We've made it a tradition to "light up" the Christmas lights on Thanksgiving night.
What a little cutie Lili is in her new shoes!! She's getting so big! It won't be long before she's walking in those new shoes!
Take care my friend!
~Kris~
I have always like to wait until after Thanksgiving to decorate.
Enjoyed your post as always!
Hi Linda!
What a sweetheart you are! I just love reading your posts and "peeping" into your house! I always feel as if I have been over for a visit with you and I also leave wondering why I don't put in the effort to make my house as beautiful as yours! I am glad you are having a good fall (I don't get the whole leaf thing - I guess I just don't have that many leaves here in southern New Mexico, and the ones that do fall I leave for the worms to eat in the winter...I imagine if you left all yours the mulch would add several inches per year to your yard?) I am glad you get to spend time with your grandbaby and are enjoying your activities! If you don't have time to stop by and say hi, don't worry - I know you have many comments to answer!
C. C.
Linda, I feel your pain about raking leaves! We tackled the project last weekend and I'm not sure you'd even know we did that looking out in our yard now! We've got a good plan, DH uses the leaf blower to make piles, DD and I rake the piles onto tarps and the boys drag them out front to the curb. I said that when the kids are gone we're moving! You should have heard the 3 of them complain about that one. Just wait till next year when Lily is over to "help" you with the leaves. Each year I remember back when DH and I used rake alone and the kids would jump into every pile we made and destroy them. What great memories when they were little. The boys used to drive their sister's Barbie Jeep through the piles too! Good Memories. ~Ann
Oh my gosh Linda! Lilliana is getting so big and just too cute.
I too amy kind of antsy for Christmas Decorating. Although here in Wisconsin it has been 70 degrees out!!
Take care and I loved reading your post as usual.

Linda, it seems like every year the Christmas selling season starts earlier and earlier. When I was a little girl, we hardly thought about Christmas until after Thanksgiving! Now-a- days, I feel so stressed out if I'm not all decorated and all done with my shopping by Thanksgiving....but, I am SOOO ready for it to come down after Christmas. Our tradition is to put everything Christmas away on Jan. 1st. Usually, I leave a few Winter things (snowmen mainly)out until I decorate for Valentines Day.
Can't wait to see what you do this year for Christmas!
Hugs, Shari
Love that picture of Lili...oh my gosh, she is absolutely precious!!
Love your other pictures too. The tallow berries look wonderful where you put them. Don't you just love em'?
Have a great week my friend!!
Hugs,
Lisa
Well, I think that decorating for Christmas before thanksgiving is truly a personal preference. I actually do it when I find the time and it is usually a little later. I have found that if I get too excited too early I can get burnt out before it gets here. I love all the pics and ideas though, as it does get me going! I love those berries! And in your basket, it is beautiful! I just got done with the yard too, only flower beds rather than leaves. Lili looks so cute in that picture! She is really growing. Have fun with her! Jayne
Hi Linda!
I say GO FOR IT! I can't wait to get fall up, can't wait to get fall down, and Christmas up! Then come January, I can't wait to get it all down again. I just love the change I guess! (ha,ha) It really makes for a festive Thanksgiving dinner too! I like to mix a few pine boughs, white twinkle lights AND the indian corn and fallish stuff for Thanksgiving. It really does look nice together! I have even been known to do a "ThanksChristmas" tree! I tie bundles of mini indian corn, add some bittersweet, some white lights and rafia intermixed and then I may or may not add the ginerbread men and a few star ornaments. Have a great week!
~Kim
Linda, This has been my dilema for the past few weeks. I am having my husbands family here for thanksgiving on the Saturday after, and then the following week, I am having about 25 ladies from church here for our annual Christmas party, not alot of time between the two to take one holiday down and pull out the next. UGHHHH I have to decide and soon, I dont want my Thanksgiving guests dissappointed by having a Christmas house to eat in, decisions decisions! Thanks for sharing, and your grandbaby is too darn cute! Sue
I am one of those folks that loves my home best at Christmas. I always have everything up and in full light by Thanksgiving. It generally takes 2 full weekends to decorate and put up all my trees that I want to be able to enjoy it for as long as possible.
Love the pic of your darling, little granddaughter. She looks so happy!
Hi Linda, LOVE your blog.....I usually do not comment, but had to ask a question and throw in my 2 cents about decorating for Christmas early. First the question....I noticed the prim jar with the antique looking tin lid in the first photo...is it a repro and if it is, do you know where I may purchase one? I am looking for a thin walled jar with a real, handmade, natural, not painted, tin lid.....I have seen many nice , but 'not quite what I want' jars...any help would be wonderful! As for decrorating early....I let Thanksgiving be Thanksgiving, not Christmas Lite. IMHO, each Holiday deserves its own time and space and sometimes it DOES make for a hurried and time-crunched decorating marathon, but that is how it works for me. I may step on a few toes with my stance, I don't judge anyone that does decorate early...but I want to see a Thanksgiving table and house filled with harvest reminders, and take the occasion to be truly thankful for all of my blessings. Have a great November!!

Christmas before Thanksgiving? Never!
I am so looking forward to picking up CS. I keep telling hubby to pick one up when he's out. lol This year I am just itching to decorate for Christmas. It's not always that way for me. Usually, I'm a day after Thanksgiving kind of gal but all the prim bloggers with their Christmasy ways entice me. :)
Your granddaughter is so adorable. Have lots of fun with her. I love that Mr. Red Door tries to monopolize your time with her. hehe
Thank you for such a beautiful, inspiring blog!
Hi Linda,
Love Lilianna...she looks like a good natured baby, always smiling:)
I always think of decorating early for Christmas but never do but last year I did put up my tree nothing else since I worked and this year will be no different with me working again.
Love the berries you recieved, I've never seen ones like that and they look just wonderful in your baskets.
Thanks for offering to help with the live writer, I want to do it but it just seems like I never have the time what with the job and watching the girls. When I do though I'll probably bother you alot about it. LOL
Have a great evening and I also always enjoy coming thur your red door!
Rondell
Hi, Have I told you I love your blog!! I decorate the day after Thanksgiving...I live in New England and I think that is sort-of the norm here, but the past few years, I do start a little early, I mix the Thanksgiving with Christmas, but not to Chrismasy...
I say decorate when you want and I do play Christmas carols before Thanksgiving! Have fun, what ever you do!
love the tallowberry she sent..they look fabulous with all your wonderful decor..your grandbaby is just too cute..what a happy baby..she is always smiling...I remember the traditions of what you talked about for christmas too..I decorate after thanksgiving as I like to give each holiday the hoopla it deserves...have a wonderful week.:)
She is adorable!
It's tradition we always start decorating the day after Thanksgiving. May not get it all done but begin work on it that weekend.
Peggy
Linda,
I usually decorate for Christmas after Thanksgiving weekend because I have a huge Holiday Craft Show that I do on Thanksgiving weekend...and I'm usually done by the first weekend in December. However this year, I still have my show Thanksgivng weekend, but the following weekend is a baby shower for DD that Josie and I are giving for her mommy. So, I've been giving it some thought to decorate right before Thanksgiving to make it easier to get ready for the baby shower...plus Thanksgiving dinner is at my parent's home this year, so it would not look like Christmas there.
We usually start seeing Christmas trees through windows around the area we live in starting in the middle of November. I think that whatever works for each of us is the correct way to go whether it is before or after Thanksgiving.
~Cindy~
Oh Grammy, my joints are aching right now also -- Oy vey! Did my mom's front and back lawn, and cemented the patio, so I know how you feel! (guess what -- I have the a.c on tonite -- its 70!) -- so for me Christmas decorating has to wait until its cold and frosty! Lilianna looks so BIG, and I love those sneakers! SHe's tooooo cute!
Hi Linda,
I too begin to take down my Fall decor and do some cleaning and then put up Christmas after the cleaning. All on the Thanksgiving weekend. But, we have 3 babies now who spend a good deal of time at Gamma and Geeps house and we have been toning it down since they have all become so active!
Lili is a cutie patootey in her little sneaks, sitting there so proud on your sofa!!!
Hi Grammy Linda! Oh my gosh I can't believe how much Liliana has grown...doesn't that sound cliche..but it is so true. She is adorable and so sweet with her little tennis shoes today!
We went to my niece's baby's dedication today...my parent's great grandbaby. It was just so precious and wonderful. Love the world with little babies in it! big smile. I agree with your dilemma about decorating...I too go back and forth. This year Thanksgiving is here...so I'm stuck!
Give yourself a hug from me!
Blessings,
Debbie
Hi Linda, Lillian is adorable. When my mom was alive I always put the tree on Thanksgiving day. After she past away I put the tree before that day. You need to think about your decor this year , Liliana will love the lights on your decor. Really, the babies enjoy them so much. I never seeing tallow berries in person... but yours and Lisa pictures are awesome. I want to see these beauties in person, they looks beautiful.
6 words Linda: WE SHOULD! WE SHOULD! WE SHOULD!
Ha Ha! I agree to each his own, but I am decorating for Christmas as soon as possible.
Lili is ADORABLE, she is so beautiful Linda. I can't believe how fast she is growing!
Noelle is walking everywhere now, she barely crawls and can stand up without holding onto anything and goes...She dances too. My heart just melts when she runs across the room with her little arms and hands outstretched to me, running as fast as her little legs can carry her!
Have a wonderful week!
Robin~♥
Linda,
I too love the tradition of Christmas decorating the day after Thanksgiving, but will be doing it early this year due to travel plans. Your Lili is so cute, my Lily saw her pic and was saying "Aw Baby"!! too cute!
I love my fall decorations. I definately leave them up until after Thanksgiving. Traditionally, since my 3 girls and their families come to my house for Thanksgiving I go all out to decorate...almost as much as I decorate for Christmas. Then the day after T-day the grandchildren help me put up my Christmas tree while I do the rest of the Christmas decorating. By the time they pack up to go back to Utah the house is ready for Christmas. We usually have a early gift exchange of a few small gifts before they leave.
I like doing it that way...but if you decorate early I will enjoy seeing the pictures. Your home is always so lovely.
Have a great week. I send hugs,
Grammy Lura
Linda,
Lili just gets more beautiful with each picture you post!! What a happy baby.
When it comes to Christmas decorating I wait till after Thanksgiving. My personal feeling is that Thanksgiving is a very important holiday and should be kept seperate from Christmas. I start putting my Christmas decor out the weekend after Thanksgiving, the tree goes up a week or two after. I also leave Christmas up till Jan. 6 in honor of the Epiphany.
But like you said it's all personal preference...no wrong way or right way!!
Have a wonderful week!
Hugs,
Karen
Christmas decor this year is going to be very simple. Due to our continued projects I am not doing any entertaining this year. My rule has always been the day after Thanksgiving.....but each person has there on way.
I would love to "LOVE UP" that Lili!
{"LOVE UP") are Harley words)
Beth
All my fall stuff was put away yesterday and I gave the house a good dusting and cleaning afterward. I too am going to enjoy the 'barren' look for a few weeks before I slowly start to take out my Christmas decorations.
What an awesome picture of Liliana. How can that smile not melt your heart? She looks like she can 'crawl' a marathon in her new sneakers.
Have a super week, Linda!
Over the years we decorated about the first week of December for our Christmas but the last 4 years it has been the week of Thanksgiving because our home is turned into a store for the weekend following Thanksgiving - it's a wee early but we have no choice - but it sure is festive!
How fun to have received the Tallow Berries...I'll have to go on a search now! They're beautiful.
Karen
I am going to decorate the day after Thanksgiving this year. I can't wait!! If I do it any earlier I don't want to get sick of all of my Christmas decor. I love Christmas and am counting down to decorating time. Thanksgiving needs to have its place too, so that's why I wait. I usually put everything up and then we will go out and get our tree the first or second week of December. I love your house and how you decorate. I live in a raised ranch here in CT. and even though my house is not old I want it to look prim, so I love how you do the same. Lili is beautiful by the way!

Hi Grammy Linda,
First off, Lili is so darn cute with that big smile. I love her new sneakers. I see with that smile she loves her sneakers too. I always look forward of seeing pictures of Lili, she puts a smile on my face for sure!!!!
I can't wait to see your home decorated for Christmas. I will be decorating early again this year. Just like you my parents always waited to decorate after Thanksgiving, and I did too, for awhile but everything is so rushed today that my Honey and I decided to decorate for Christmas early so we can enjoy the Christmas decor.
I LOVE Christmas!!!!
Give Lili a big hug and kiss for me,
God Bless
Tricia
Even though you have minimal Thanksgiving decor, it looks amazing!
It seems the leaves never stop dropping here...The Oak trees love to hold onto their leaves longer, and they slowly keep coming down...UGH!
Lili is always smiles...I can tell she loves her new sneakers!! Such a cutie pie!
Have a great week!
Hi Linda,
OH-Lili is just the sweetest lil thing...everytime I stop by, I always leave with a smile :)
I always decorate for Christmas, on Thanksgiving,evening...I was tempted to start a bit earlier-when we got that SNOW...but now it's nice again, for the time being, so the urge has passed (for now) ;)
Have a wonderful week, friend ♥
Hi Linda,
My Christmas decor starts going up the day after Thanksgiving. I like the look of pumpkins, and autumn leaves decorating my Thanksgiving tablescape. I have china for each holiday and table linens for each too, so the Christmas decor will have to wait.
Oh Linda I can just picture you diving into that pile of leaves!!! And Mr. Red Door right after you! That sure put a big old smile on my face!
Lilianna looks just adorable in her new sneakers! What a happy baby she is, always with a big smile.
The tallow berries are gorgeous and of course you've displayed them just perfectly! I have one tiny pick of faux tallow berries that came tied to a bow from a gift basket we received. I need to look for some more.
Have a wonderful day! Hugs, Loretta
Hi Linda.....after reading all of the previous posts I believe the consensus is that we all love these seasons and there is no right or wrong time to decorate. We just need to do what feels right. Personally I am using this time to tidy up all of the messes I have created by sewing and stuffing and stitching lately. And I am adding a few new treasures to add to my holiday decorating. There are a couple open houses I want to see this coming weekend too. It is DD # 3's turn to host our Thanksgiving this year so I may be making the switch over sooner this year.
I don't need to tell you that Lili is an Angel. For now and evermore she will be the deciding factor in all of your family traditions!
Take care,
Linda
Hi Linda, thank you for seeking out my RMS pages and leaving me a message! I, like you, bought my only jar locally and not thru mail order. I have searched and re-searched the web, and not a jar fits the description! But thanks for responding, maybe I will stumble upon the 'treasure' sooner than later....... I also understand the decorating debate, with people's free time at issue...but I am an odd duck, I do not even READ Christmas magazines until after November 1st! :) Of course I know stores and crafters have to be ahead of the curve, and I do Christmas crafts early, but no decorating! What helps me is to take a picture of what works in years past, packing it away carefully and grouping those items. That seems to make putting it all out faster (and trust me, I have a ton)...THEN I tweak and rearrange, but at least it is out and the enjoyment begins!! (Hardly ground breaking hints here, but it DOES work for me!)Thanks again, and have a great week with Lili and family! Rosie
Hi Linda...That little Lili is just as sweet as she can be...so adorable..
I always start decorating for Christmas early...I have all my decorating done for Thanksgiving...then we can enjoy the holiday season until after the new year...
Have a great week...
Hugs, Trena
My son was born on Dec 13th...12 days before Christmas...so we started the tradition of decorating for Christmas after his Birthday...that way his day was special then we did Christmas...when he got older he didn't care if Christmas decorations were up before his birthday...and my daughter did the Nutcracker Ballet for 10 years so we usually decorated around that show....this year I'm not for sure what I will do...I have scaled way back from how I use to decorate...next year will be different we will have a grandbaby so maybe a new tradition will start....thanks for sharing...
Each year is different for me. Sometimes I'm ready to decorate for Christmas early and others, I like to hang on to the fall decor for a while.
This year, I'm really enjoying my fall things so I think I will leave them out until Thanksgiving.
I'm really trying to live in the moment and taking things a little slower feels good!
Lili's shoes are adorable!
FIRST things first...Lili is BEAUTIFUL...such a happy baby! I enjoy seeing pictures of her. Next...I used to feel that I must wait until after Thanksgiving to decorate for Christmas but as I get older I have changed my mind. Christmas is my favorite time of year and I really enjoy having my tree(s) shining and just sitting with a cup of coffee as I enjoy them. I have so many get-togethers during the month of December until I can not wait to do all my decorating. In fact, I plan to begin this week.
I always like to get one holiday over before I start another. I think each holiday deserves its pomp and circumstance. I have a little shop that I have been going to for over 10-12 years that use to be primitives and country. Within the past few years they have gone to purses and jewelry and not so much primitives. I asked her why the change and she said that they have to go with the flow and cater to the younger crowd and to what they can sell!! Enjoyed your post and the new little tennies.
Hi Linda....
You are so right, to each his own!
At our house the Christmas decorating has started. I have three trees up so far, they are in need of some tweaking, but they're up.
I made some simple prim stockings and they have been hung by the chimney with care... :)
I started outside today. It's a warm day here in Ohio and I'm taking full advantage of it!
Blessings,
Linda*
Hi Linda ~~ I started decorating already and will be done before Thanksgiving, so stop over and take a peek.
Love your tallow berries, I have had mine for years and take special care so I can use them year to year.
As always your Darling Lili makes me Smile.
Hugs ~ Connie xox
I think it is totally up to you as far as the decorating goes. Here in Ohio there are stores with Christmas windows that went up right after Halloween. I personally , because of craft shows that I have been doing, have been listening to Christmas music before Halloween came. It such a wonderful time of the year, where most everyone has that cheerful heart, & giving heart. Enjoy it!
Hi Linda,
I feel your dilemma about holiday decorating. I don't have the energy anymore to do it all at once. I start by putting the little lighted candles in my windows at Halloween. The time change makes it get dark early so it's nice to have the lights in the windows, even though it's early in the season. By Thanksgiving, I'll start changing things like throw pillows and quilts so that I have introduced a lot of reds. Once Thanksgiving is over, I put the garlands on all the windows under the lights and then I start slowly building, adding a little Christmas at a time until we are fully decorated by the second week in December or so. I guess it's my nature not to do anything sudden or drastic!
Lucky you to have those tallow berries. I've kept mine for many years and consider them precious!
Take care,
Joanne
Hey Linda! Great post as always. I wonder how in the world you find the time to do all you do! I am finding it harder & harder to post on my blog and visit everybody. So I am simplifying everything I can.
I always decorate for Christmas right after Thanksgiving too. We have a specail day designated for putting up and decorating the tree, etc. I love tradition too, and now that Mama is gone, it means even more to me to hang onto them.
Liliana is adorable as always and growing fast. She will need those walkers before you know it.
Have a great week!
We decorate right after Thanksgiving too, well actually that weekend. While the turkey is cooking we put up the trees (artificial because of allergies, unfortunately) but I think I might put some fresh greens here and there that won't be too much on our allergies. So usually by the end of the weekend we are all up. At least that is the goal - last year we were sick that weekend. I will definately post pics when ready. I am tempted to start sooner though because I've been finding such good things at goodwill and primitive shops here. I certainly miss a New England fall season. My hubby is a pastor and there is rumor of a church in Connecticut that might have him on their list. So we'll see if we get back to the east or not. Good luck with your decorating. I always love looking at your photos.
Lisa
I just love your blog look forward to reading it every week .
Hi Grammy Linda! I too always decorate the weekend after Thanksgiving. It is definitely a tradition in the Withers home! We have been in retail for so long and were forced to do the Christmasy stuff out before Thanksgiving and hated to do it, but had to! So we enjoy the weekend and of course the week after Thanksgiving dressing up our home! Another tradition is putting the Ceramic Tree that my Grandma made me for our first Christmas married....she has since passed away and it is definitely NOT prim but I put it right along side all my other most treasured things in my home.
Thanks SO much for your blog and inspiration!
Your little Lili is adorable! What fun you are gonna have with her in this Christmas season celebrating Jesus!!!
Good morning Linda. I'm probably going to wait until Thanksgiving weekend also. I have to look at Christmas at the shop for so long that I like to wait a little longer to start my home. This year I'd like to try to do it a little more "simple" and "natural" with greens, white lights and my most prim goodies. Someday we've got to get those little girls together, Lucy is a really smiley baby too! Does Lili have a "jumper"? Lucy just LOVES hers and she laughs right out loud when she's in there jumping. Love your berries in the basket, they look WONDERFUL! Have a great day, Dawn
Linda
Your granddaughter is such a cutie.
I enjoyed reading your blog.
I always wait till after Thanksgiving to decorate for Christmas. I like to do one season at a time.
I guess that is the way I was raised.
Thanks for sharing
Linda, your blog posts are better than a magazine! Always enjoy it, and seeing your beautiful pics. Of course, the cutest pic is of Lili, what a dollie!
Can't wait to see your house all decorated for Christmas...oh how I wish I could see for real :-)
hugs, kathy xx
Hi Linda,
Being a New Englander like you I don't really start decorating until Thanksgiving. It's hard to get rid of all the fall harvest goodies. But that doesn't mean I'm not thinking Christmas. I try to do different things each year and so I have in my head a plan for each room. Right now I'm making some topiaries as well as orange pomanders. I think the creating is the most fun part.
I've put some pictures of past christmas on my picturetrail so come on by.

Hi Linda! I can't remember if I've ever left a comment before, but I read your blog all the time and I love it! You are so inspiring. :-) I love your gorgeous house that you decorate so nicely. I always decorate Thanksgiving weekend too...growing up, the Christmas season didn't officially start until we saw Santa in the Macy's parade. So it's hard to break tradition! P.S. Too funny about your neighbor and the "leaf fence." Sheesh! Some people.
It doesn't matter what season you're decorating for, Linda, because your house is always gorgeous!
I start earlier because it seems to take me awhile to get it done and I like time to sit back and just enjoy it and watch my Christmas movies at night!
Wow how Liliana has grown! She looks like a little charmer! I think she might favor her Grandpa a little...Mr. Red Door! How much fun you must be having helping to care for her part time!
Have a great weekend!
Tammy
I had never heard of a popcorn flower before. Very unique! Thanks for sharing.
Linda, I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed your Thanksgiving tradions on A Primitive Place! Thank you for the wonderful photos and ideas!!
Many blessings to you and yours at this time of Thankfulness! I am thankful for blogger friends like you!

Hi Linda,
Thanks for stopping by and congratulating Heidi on her give away win.
I have always decorated for Christmas the day after Thanksgiving...with the exception on my nativity which I put up before because it is a lot of work. I also get my twiggy tree set up in the living room and just have white lights on it....and lastly I string garland up my stairs....just greens and add berries etc after Thanksgiving, I put the floodlights outside....before it gets to cold....all the ropings out there go up after Thanksgiving........whew....I'm tired already!
Lilli is precious.....and growing fast
Hugs,
Lynn
Well Linda, You have comments up the yin yang here! LoL
As normal, I enjoyed you post. I love seeing Lili growing. I love her smile. Is she using that high chair at your house yet?
I love your Thanksgiving touches.
I don't start getting Christmas out until after thanksgiving. We used to go the day after and cut our tree. And that was the beginning of the decorating. Today, my tween is getting the reindeer out and setting them in the yard and making sure that all the lights are working. It is snowing here and fairly cold, so maybe that will have to wait until next sat.
Enjoy your day.
Mercy
Hi, Linda ~
I'm actually going to start a little decorating tomorrow. Simon will be out deer hunting so I can clean & decorate. I also got some tallow berries & I love them. I haven't done anything with them yet but they are awesome.
Liliana is such a little ham, isn't she? Just adorable.
Great post.
Hugs,
Pam
Hi Linda,
Loved reading your blog as usual :)
As being a Canadian we celebrate our Thanksgiving much earlier. But I was always brought up to NEVER decorate until after Rememberance Day (Nov 11)due to respect. So as a individual, we wait until after. I do have my outdoors decorated (well missing the greens) since we have been having such nice weather, can't pass that up. But I am waiting to do the inside probably next weekend or the beginning of the next week :) The girls are getting antsy. I know I can't wait to see pics of your place. It's always just so perfect :)
I can't believe how much your baby girl is growing. She just keeps getting cuter and cuter. Makes me really miss the baby stage. Have fun with her :)
Sandy
